Ultra-high Power Density Battery – FlexEl

A major OEM had a goal of developing a disposable consumer product incorporating a small, ultra-high power density battery. The battery targets included supporting very high burst of power events (~2.5Watts) hundreds of times at high operating voltage in a smaller than AAAA (LR61) cylindrical form factor. The OEM had spent considerable time evaluating and experimenting with lithium-polymer technology. Those battery solutions suffered from several drawbacks:

  • Battery shelf life was too short, meaning that their product would have to be charged by the consumer prior to use, thereby dramatically affecting the user experience,
  • Power solution was expensive; the battery cost was high, and in addition they had to add costly safety electronics, further increasing device cost.
  • Lithium-polymer human and environmental safety was a significant concern for the OEM related to the risk of sudden battery ignition or violent disassembly.
